Activities in the community complement the rhythm of in-house activities, providing individualized paths of growth to each resident. For example, a meditation/support group is held weekly at the house for residents and occasional guests from the area. The group is led by a brain injury survivor who shares her ongoing recovery from brain injury through music, meditation, reading, poetry and gardening. At least once a week, residents visit the local branch of the Cambridge Public Library to borrow books and videos. Social events are organized at the house, for family and friends, and other brain injury survivors.
Staff support and guide residents in activities of daily living such as personal hygiene, planning and preparing meals; food shopping; doing laundry and keeping bedrooms orderly; improving interpersonal skills; planning social and recreational events; keeping track of schedules, meds, and appointments. The staff can also assist with mobility and transfers as needed.
Residents attend monthly meetings of the Boston Area Brain Injury Support Group at Spaulding Hospital.
Staff accompany residents to religious service if they wish.
Staff and residents plan together excursions to sites of interest and special events in the greater Boston metropolitan area.
Optional activities paid individually by residents include fitness exercise programs and swimming at the West Suburban YMCA; tai chi classes at the Spaulding satellite center; art therapy; and music therapy, Friday night dining out; movies and concerts.
